Dalley at the farmhouse

"Dalley" a variety of chilly found in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim hills. It is round and red when ripe.  It is very very hot and at one go most can eat only about a quarter or half of it...for some...just the smell is sufficient. For this reason it is nicknamed  fireball. However there are some veterans...at least i know a lady who is addicted to it. she takes it so much that it is said her blood has become hot and recently the doctor said that it is not fit for donation.Next time you visit hills do try some of it....it's definitely going to be a lifetime experience.Dalley and churpi(cheese) ko achar with hot momos is what we recommend...

Tents Pitched by our guest Mr Zamling Norgay

Famous mountaineer,  and son of Tenzing Norgay, Mr Zamling Norgay(an Everester himself)  visited "The Reshi Retreat and Farmhouse" on the 12th of June with his family for a weekend break.

the heaven and the earth

a typical monsoon scene from Reshi. The tip of  the hills around "The Reshi Retreat and Farmhouse" covered with fog creates an illusion of land rising up to touch the sky. The recent rains have swept away our "Farkey".
If you want to visit the farmhouse, its going to be a light trek of a quarter of a kilometer from the Reshi bridge that connects West Bengal with Sikkim.

cold eve and hot soup!!!

Today was a cold day. With lot of fog and chill air around us, we at Reshi kept ourselves around our very own "mato ko chula" enjoying hot soup. Seems it's going to be early to bed to night. So guys may be Laila is a blessing for Reshi and we are enjoying it.

Early rains!!!

This is not a season for prolonged rains. Is it that the rain gods have comletely missed their timings. What ever might be the reason, these early rains have certainly changed the colour of "our piece of world". Reshi looks green and fresh... fields look lively  with new plants sprouting from the barren winter ground and the wet smell of earth  spread a peculiar fragrance to entice every one.  It is once again nature calling for a brand new experience.

Farkey

Farkey- Small makeshift bridge which usually don't survive monsoon swells. So after each monsoon a new Farkey is constructed.

Its getting warmer at Reshi and this warmth definitely has brought new  life... new outlook. Every one has come to know the real value of cool waters of Reshi river...its strenght to beat the hot summer's eye.

basket weaving at the farmhouse

"Bamboo baskets" an ethnic product of this part of the world. These sturdy baskets are used for carrying anything and everything. In some remote areas they are also used to transport patients and old people.Perfectly woven baskets using right kind of bamboos can last for years. however sad thing is that the art of weaving bamboo baskets is slowly dying with the introduction of cheap ready-made bags.

fishing at Reshi river...

Fishing has always been a thrill, and in Reshi river every visitor tries it out. However serious fishermen and those guests seeking a bit of adventure wait till it gets dark. As night falls they move out...become a part of the infinite darkness and cast their nets into the river for bounties.

our typical "mato ko chula"

"Mato ko Chula"...mud oven usually found in our villages. Wood is used as fuel. Believe it or not...food cooked in "daura"(wood) is tastier than that cooked in gas or kerosene.  Reshi Retreat & Farmhouse cooks food in this
mud oven...ever wondered why the food is so tasty???

STUDENTS TREKKING TOWARDS DAMSANG GARI- LAST LEPCHA FORT

"Damsang-gari" where the word "gari" means a fort. This fort was built by the last Lepcha chief Punu Gyabo Achuk. It is situated in the upper jungles of Pedong. Now only the ruins remain. Myth about this fort is that it is believed to be built in a single night with the help of supernatural powers.Surprised...beleive it!!!

Reshi saw a lot of visitors this winters. lots of construction works happened. a solid wall was built on the river front. this would certainly help our visitors sleep peacefully even  during monsoons when the reshi river swells to its fullest. wishing you all a happy new year 2010.
